Thankful for Small Favors

The Justice Department has caved and elected not to hold jihadist trials in New York City after all, citing security concerns. Where this leaves the effort to turn the war against the jihadists into a legal proceeding is unclear. Most likely, they'll just choose another, less politically sensitive location. But, at least it signals that the Federal ship can be deflected, at least temporarily, if the right amount and kind of pressure is brought to bear.

I see it differently. If it was a jurisdictional change to the military system, that would be a substantial change. A minor geographic change has been undertaken for the worst reason. The main reason is fear of the jihadist attacks. This was the same reason some didn’t want the WTC rebuilt. It is the same reason some won’t public the Danish Cartoons.

If Obama & Bloomberg believe that foreign jihadists should be tried in the domestic judicial system, they should be willing to stand-up for those beliefs.

I should have written more clearly (or at greater length) because, in fact, we don't see it differently. I agree with you.

I'm not thankful they've responded to safety concerns and moved the trial, I'm thankful that public pressure caused the DOJ to do something - anything - other than what it wanted to do. (In particular, other than have a show trial in NYC to demonstrate how 'reasonable' and 'rule-of-law-loving' Progressive officials are.) The more they're pressured to act like sleep-deprived cats on a hot tin roof, the better.

It remains to be seen what they'll do next. If pressure continues, and continues to increase, they may in fact have to change their game plan in a more substantial way. That's what I'm hoping for, and thankful for the pressure that may make them do it.

Unless you have information I've not seen, we don't know yet whether it's no more than a geographic change. If that's all it turns out to be -- and it may well -- rest assured I'll be the first to call them worse than useless dhimmis. (Not that we have to wait for that to justify such a pronouncement.)

Let's hope they move it all the way to Gitmo ... that would be poetic justice.

PS Best wishes for the New Years, Jeff.

Wouldn't it, though?

P.S. Don't be a stranger. Stop by more often.
